Most of my job involves doing R&D in various guises. Most is project-specific (and secret :-) but occasionally it's generic enough that I think "somebody ought to write a tutorial / FAQ for this".

Even more occasionally I make it to the next stage, which is, "... and that somebody is me". Which gives rise to this section.
